Sot was founded on the idea that beautiful things are made by hand. And in a world where most people don’t know where their items are made – we do. All our products are designed and manufactured in Sweden and we work with premium paper from Lessebo Bruk, a paper mill in Småland in southern Sweden and high quality leather from Tärnsjö Garveri, a Swedish tannery that has been producing vegetable tanned leathers since 1873.
Our name Sot is the Swedish word for soot – the fine black particles of ashes and charcoal produced during fire. Our thread bound books will preserve traces from your inner fire and bind your stories.
Lessebo Bruk ranks among the most climate-friendly manufacturers in the paper industry when it comes to carbon emissions. Many factors contribute to their excellent results. Their approach to environmental issues involves more than production: They also add harvesting and distribution to the equation. They only use trees from Swedish forests. This makes their products carbon neutral – or even carbon negative.
The art of vegetable tanning leather is thousands of years old. Since 1873 Tärnsjö Garveri has been using these time-tested methods. Industrialization has allowed tanneries to offer standard hides at lower prices and many tanneries have chosen that path. Tärnsjö didn’t. Why? Because the aesthetic of vegetable tanned leather is unparalleled and the patina that it develops with use over time cannot be produced any other way. It is also the only way to produce premium leather of desired quality while at the same time respecting our environment.
